School of Health and Human Sciences

Health disparities. Obesity. Community peace building. If it’s in the news, researchers at the School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) are working on it, rolling up their sleeves to make a difference. HHS prepares new generations of professionals and leaders to impact the human experience, enhancing the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities across the lifespan. Our faculty are extremely engaged with the community, and our students work with community members through their courses, community service, practica, student teaching, clinical rotations, and internships.

Through Light the Way, you can advance the vision of the School of Health and Human Sciences to inspire and equip people and transform institutions to work in ways that make the world better, safer, healthier, and more humane and just.

The School of Health and Human Sciences is a school with a true ‘culture of care.’ Through the pedagogical expertise, translational research, and scholarship of faculty and staff, students gain the tools and knowledge to enhance the quality of life of individuals, families, and communities.

School of Health and Human Sciences Funding Priorities

Investing in Graduate Education

UNCG has a stellar reputation for elevating opportunities available to undergraduates. A UNCG degree makes a difference, as evidenced by our ratings as the #1 school for social mobility in the UNC System and #23 nationally. The School of Health and Human Sciences is proud to be a major part of that accomplishment in transforming the lives of undergraduates; we now believe that it is imperative to extend the same opportunities to graduate students.

Your campaign gift will be an investment in our talented master’s and doctoral students, attracting the very best future scholars to UNCG.

Increasing Endowed Professorships

The marketplace for exceptional faculty is very competitive. Often, multiple institutions compete for a single outstanding faculty member. The challenge is particularly daunting for universities like UNCG, which does not have a huge endowment to compete with well-funded private schools or even the public flagships.

Your generosity through the campaign can help level the playing field. HHS currently has three endowed professorships; through the campaign, we aim to increase that number to eight. Endowed professorships promote excellence in the faculty and are an invaluable tool in retaining top faculty. They also help ensure that students learn from the very best teacher-scholars.

Strengthen Research

HHS creates new knowledge. The work of our faculty improves health, well-being, and quality of life for populations, communities, and individuals worldwide. Through the campaign, we seek to create a fund that will advance our research enterprise. Your generosity will provide the infrastructure to increase faculty success in applying for grants, ultimately drawing more research and contract funding to HHS, amplifying the impact of our world-class faculty’s scholarship. Your gift will also reap dividends for students, who will benefit from faculty members’ increased skills, knowledge, and productivity — as well as the opportunity to participate alongside them in their own research.

Impacting Our Community

Faculty research at HHS is making a difference in our region. The Guilford County Solution to the Opioid Problem has been extremely effective in lowering opioid-related deaths in the county. The Center for Women’s Health and Wellness, Child Care Education Program, and Speech and Hearing Center provide a variety of services to community members. These partnerships, while invaluable, are the result of much time, energy, and painstaking relationship building with community groups.

Your gift can support faculty efforts to coordinate with community groups to ensure that the research projects and service undertaken are both consequential and mutually beneficial.
