COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

The College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) is the creative heart of UNCG — transforming lives through exceptional artistic and scholarly experiences. In keeping with our mission as a public university, we also create essential art experiences for all residents of the Southeast.

We are proud to offer the most comprehensive visual and performing arts programs in North Carolina. Designated by the UNC System as an “area of distinction,” the College is built on a foundation of academic excellence, creative innovation, and community engagement. CVPA offers performance opportunities, hands-on learning, and research along with high-quality studio training and personalized mentorship.

Through Light the Way, you can help us build on these accomplishments to achieve our goal of being recognized as one of the nation’s leading arts institutions.

The synergy created by housing a premier arts college within a public research university gives CVPA its unique character and defines its mission: to enable students to understand and to embrace the artistic expression of a diversity of cultures, empowering them to enrich the human experience for themselves and others.

College of Visual and Performing Arts Funding Priorities

Increasing Student Success

Investing in CVPA students through scholarships and programs will generate a high return both in the students who are recipients and in the difference that these artists, educators, and scholars will make in the world. Such support — especially needed for first-generation college students and those from low- and middle-income families — will help us recruit top talent, ensure the diversity of our student body, and increase CVPA’s competitiveness with other institutions.

Your campaign gifts will allow us to raise CVPA’s average scholarship from 13% of in-state tuition to our target of 27% and provide students with additional enrichment experiences.

Fostering Diversity

CVPA is remarkable for its low teacher-student ratio and opportunities for one-on-one teaching and mentorship. Because of the close relationship between the faculty and students, CVPA provides students with exceptional artistic and academic experiences.

While we are proud of this track record, we are cognizant that 41% of CVPA students are Black or Brown, and yet just 18% of our full-time faculty are people of color. The campaign provides an important opportunity to begin to change this statistic by recruiting diverse role models; increasing our annual equity, diversity, and inclusion grants; and creating a fund to ensure resource equity among faculty and staff.

Strengthening Community Engagement

CVPA enables access to the arts for the community through our 24 community-engaged projects, such as Greensboro Project Space, Summer Music Camp, and the UNC Greensboro Concert and Lecture Series (UCLS).

Your campaign gift can help endow a fund to support these experiences, which enrich the education of CVPA students by teaching them how to become community-based artists and equipping them for careers in the arts. Your generosity will also help fulfill our mission as a public university by delivering quality programs to K–12 students from the Guilford County Public Schools as well as the community at large.

Investing in Infrastructure

While CVPA’s programs are world-class, our facilities have not all kept pace. As a college, we are spread out in 15 buildings, with no space for critical interdisciplinary collaboration. Your generosity will enable us to create college-wide facilities that will bring students together to present immersive experiences. Your gift can jump-start a Visual and Performing Arts Center that would bridge Taylor Theatre, Sprinkle Theatre, and the UNCG Auditorium. This proposed community- and arts-focused complex will serve UNCG and contribute to Greensboro’s vibrant arts and cultural community. You can also invest in an equipment fund to support CVPA’s full spectrum of technological needs.
