Dennis AsKew honored with endowed scholarship in music
Mrs. Martha C. Hodge and Mr. Royce C. Hodge have given $50,000 to the Dennis AsKew Endowed Scholarship in Music. The endowment was established last year in memory of Dr. Dennis AsKew, who died unexpectedly Jan. 28, 2021.
Their gift commemorates Dennis AsKew’s 29 years of commitment and excellent service to the School of Music, especially tuba students. It also honors his loving and supportive parents, Sally Curtis AsKew and the late Rev. Albert Louis AsKew. The donors are Dennis AsKew’s aunt and uncle.
With this gift, the endowment has reached approximately $100,000 to provide support for gifted and deserving UNCG students who are majoring in music.
Dr. AsKew was professor of tuba, euphonium, and music education and director of UNCG’s School of Music. A faculty member at UNCG since 1992, he served for over seven years in his administrative role, first as the department head of music performance in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, and then as director of the School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
At the time the scholarship endowment was initiated last spring, Chancellor Gilliam stated, “This endowment is created from more than 570 gifts made in Dennis’s memory from alumni, friends, colleagues, and family. It is rare to see such a magnificent outpouring of love and support in the form of a memorial scholarship, and I can think of no better way to celebrate his distinguished career.”
Join their family and over 500 alumni, colleagues, and friends in supporting the Dennis AsKew Endowed Scholarship in Music.
